Computer Accounts

What accounts will I need?

You will need an IU network ID so you can use email, OneStart, OnCourse, and various central IU systems such as Steel (web server). All SLIS students are required to have an IU email account. You will also need an IUB ADS account in order to use the UITS and SLIS Windows labs. These can be created at the same time using the techniques outlined below.

You can also request additional accounts from UITS (Ships, Nations, etc.) but these are optional unless required for a specific class.

After you get your email account set up, follow the directions outlined in the SLIS-L pamphlet to subscribe to the slis-l listserv. All SLIS students are required to subscribe to this list.

How do I get my accounts?

After you have registered for classes, you can access the online Account Management Service (AMS) from any computer with an internet connection to create your Network ID (your electronic identity at IU, consisting of a username and a passphrase) and ADS Domain account. You will also be able to create an IU email account. The entire process takes approximately 10-15 minutes.

Detailed instructions are available via the Knowledge Base.

You will need your University ID, there are two options for finding out what your UID is:

  • If you know your username and passphrase: You can use the Self-Service tab in OneStart. Follow these steps:
    1. Log into OneStart at: http://onestart.iu.edu/
    2. On the Self-Service tab, under "Personal Info", click Student ID Number/Personal Info Overview.
    3. Click View My Current Information, including University ID number. Your UID will be listed as "ID: 000xxxxxxx".
  • If you don't know your username or passphrase: If you can't log into OneStart because you don't know your username and passphrase, visit: https://itaccounts.iu.edu/ss/emplid_lookup.cgi

Enter your last name, birthdate, and student ID (usually your Social Security number) and click Submit to find out what your UID is.

UITS Support Center

If you have any problems creating an account, you can also get one by taking a picture ID to a UITS Support Center (8am-5pm Monday through Friday) in the Information Commons in the Main Library and they can help you set up your accounts.

How do I log on to the computers at SLIS?

  1. The Registrar will send a list of all students enrolled in SLIS for this semester. Only students on this list can log into SLIS computers. The new list should be active on the first day of classes. If you register or create your accounts late, you will not be on the list. In that case, first get your IUB accounts, then stop by 024 to have your username added to “the list” to gain access to SLIS computers.

On the Windows PCs:

  1. Press CTRL-ALT-DELETE
  2. Type your IUB ADS Domain username in the username field. Your IUB ADS Domain username will be the same as your network ID username.
  3. Then type your IUB ADS Domain passphrase in the password field. This passphrase is case sensitive, so make certain you enter it correctly. The IUB ADS Domain passphrase may or may not be the same as your network ID passphrase (depending on how you set up your accounts) but usually it is.
  4. Make certain the Domain field is set to ADS (rather than SLIS).
  5. Click OK to log in

On the Macs:

  1. Click the mouse button to bring up the login dialog box or wake up the display.
  2. Type your UITS network ID username in the username field.
  3. Type your UITS network ID passphrase in the password field.
  4. Click OK to log on.

IU central storage

The Resources tool in Oncourse CL allows you to store files in a central location and access them from any computer with an Internet connection. You can access the Resources tool from within Oncourse CL, or you can use WebDAV to drag and drop files between your computer and Oncourse CL Resources.
