S605 Internship in Information and Library Services:
MIS or MLS

SLIS Internships allow students in the master's and specialist degree programs to work in real world settings, guided by knowledgeable, experienced, and successful supervisors. Internships help in exploring career options and provide potential employers a valuable perspective on a student's interests and experience. SLIS maintains a list of internship placements for which we have been contacted by the potential supervisors.

S605 - Internship in Information Library Services is offered for variable credit. Each academic credit hour requires 60 hours of onsite work. Normally, the graduate student does not begin the internship until he or she has completed 18 SLIS graduate credit hours. Specific skills or courses required for an internship are listed in the descriptions. MLS students may register for 2 or 3 credits; students in dual, MIS, or specialist programs may complete up to 6 credits with advisor approval.

Discuss internship possibilities with your academic advisor, to plan the course work which will prepare you for the kind of placement you seek

Two Semesters Before Your Internship

  • Study placement options and identify those for which you will apply
  • Prepare your résumé

The Semester Before Internship

  • Intern contacts potential supervisors, interviews and selects placement
  • Intern discusses internship with SLIS advisor and gets approval
  • Intern submits an Application for Internship (application form)
    due dates are:
    • July 15 for Fall
    • November 15 for Spring
    • March 15 for Summer
  • If your application is submitted online, your advisor should email approval to the internship coordinator.
  • Internship coordinator confirms placement with supervisor
  • Within a month of submission the Coordinator sends letters of confirmation, evaluation form to supervisor (evaluation form), and evaluation form to intern (intern feedback form).

Start of Internship Semester

  • Intern begins keeping journal of internship experience
  • Intern submits updated goals and objectives, work schedule, date for oral report (during first 10 hours of work)
  • Intern begins reading and abstracting professional literature related to internship (one document for each 20 hours worked)

Midway Through Internship Semester

Intern e-mails progress report to internship coordinator

Last Week of Internship Semester

Intern submits journal and literature reports

End of Internship Semester

  • Intern presents brief oral report on highlights of the internship
  • Supervisor submits evaluation of the intern (evaluation form)
  • Intern submits evaluation of the experience (intern feedback form)
  • Coordinator reports grade for S605 (note that the course is graded Satisfactory/Fail, not with a letter grade)
