Coursework for Specialization in Music Librarianship:
Students considering a career in music librarianship are advised that a master's degree in music, in addition to the MLS, is usually required for placement in the field of music librarianship. If you are interested in obtaining a master's degree in both Library Science and in Music at the same time, you may want to consider IU-SLIS' Dual Degree Program for a Master of Library Science-Master of Arts in Music.
If you already hold a master's degree in music, or simply do not desire a
master's degree in music from IU, you may prefer the Specialization in Music Librarianship.
Coursework for both of these programs is listed on the Web pages describing the
programs, but in general, core courses include:
- M539-Introduction to Music Bibliography
- S605 (L596) - Internship in Library and Information Science (in a music library setting)
- S655 (L631) - Music Librarianship
