International Admissions

We encourage international students to apply to our school.

Apply Online

We ask that all international students apply online. The online application allows for faster processing. Apply online!

International Admissions Office

The IU Office of International Admissions will review your application first. They determine if you have the equivalent to a U.S. bachelors degree. Their initial processing may take several months. We encourage you to apply as early as possible. After initial review, they route your application to SLIS (School of Library and Information Science).

Once we receive your application, we try to process it quickly. You are welcome to call or email our office with questions, and to check on your status. Once we have a complete application, we will make an admissions decision. We will notify you of the decision. (note: Ph.D. applications are processed on a different schedule.) We will then return your materials to International Admissions. They will do final processing and help you with visa paperwork, proof of funding, and other requirements.

Conditional Admission

Working with the Intensive English Program, SLIS will consider students for Conditional Admission. Final admission will depend on completion of the SLIS English proficiency requirements. You would apply to both SLIS and the Intensive English Program. It is our understanding that the initial visa paperwork would be handled by the Intensive English Program.

English Proficiency Exam

As a part of the International Student Orientation at Indiana University, all students whose first language is not English are required to take an English Proficiency Exam. Based on the results, you may be required to take some English coursework through the Center for English Language Training (CELT). Most courses are 8 weeks and are for 1 credit hour. They are under the heading LING (Linguistics) T100 in the Schedule of Classes. Topics include: academic discussion, paragraph writing...
